| Meeting
with the Employee - Role Playing
Presenter must
do 1st set of role-playing with some members of the audience – given scripts.
Please have your "Players" read the script and ask any questions of you
prior to the presentation to the rest of the group. There are three different
skits.
Presenter is
the narrator.
ONE
Scene: Supervisors’
Office
Players: Hank
(Supervisor)
Lynn (Employee)
Props: A Tissue
A pad of Paper
and Pen
A desk or table
and two chairs
Narrator:
Hank has observed a decline in Lynn’s job performance. He has documented
his observations and is ready to discuss the issue with her. The meeting
he had scheduled is about to begin.
Hank:
"Lynn I’ve noticed a decline in your job performance lately. I thought
we could put our heads together and try to resolve this."
Lynn:
"I’m doing everything I’m supposed to. Ever since you replaced Alberto
with John, things aren’t getting done in that area."
Hank:
"This meeting is about your area and your responsibilities. I’ve observed
and noted a few things. For instance; you are late coming back from lunch
almost on a daily basis."
Lynn:
"That’s not true. I’m always working. My car’s been acting up that’s all."
Hank:
"Let me show you." (Showing her some papers) "As you can see you have been
late by 5 to ten minutes 8 out of 12 days." You have missed the deadlines
on your last three projects and you tripped over your own chair the other
day just barely missing hitting your head against the filing cabinet."
Lynn:
(Starts to cry) "I’m having some problems at home and I can’t afford to
fix my car.
Hank:
(Handing her a tissue) "Okay, let’s talk about how we can resolve the job
performance aspect of this. I also have a list of some resources you might
want to call for your personal issues."
TWO
Scene: Supervisors’
Office
Players: Hannah
(Supervisor)
George (Employee)
Props: A desk
or table and two chairs
Narrator:
Hannah has observed a decline in George’s job performance. She has documented
her observations and is ready to discuss the issue with him. She had scheduled
the meeting that is about to begin.
Hannah:
"Thank you for coming in George".
George:
"Sure Hannah, what did you need to see me about?"
Hannah:
"Well, it’s about you making your sales quotas or rather not making them
for the third week in a row. Your performance has steadily slipped since
you got back from vacation. You’ve always been a good employee so I thought
we might sit and discuss it."
George:
"Everyone has a slump now and again."
Hannah:
"Is there anything going on at work that might be causing this decrease
of 32% in sales? Are your head- phones working correctly? Are you having
any problems with your co-workers?"
George:
"No everything is fine."
Hannah:
"No, George, everything is not fine. We need to address this decline in
your productivity. What ways can you think of to bring your performance
back up? You will need to show some improvement by the end of next week
if you want to avoid disciplinary action."
George:
"Are you threatening me with my job? I’ll get a lawyer and sue the whole
bunch of you."
Hannah:
George, what I am saying is that as a supervisor my job is to ensure a
certain level of productivity and make sure that your performance meets
and exceeds those quotas. If you can’t meet those quotas I will follow
company procedure and bring this to the next level of the process that
is disciplinary action. You have the right to obtain an attorney and if
you wish to do so I suggest you call them on your break. Right now, I want
to hear your ideas on how you plan to bring up these numbers during the
next week."
George:
"I think I’ll go call my lawyer."
Hannah:
"Okay,
George, I’ll expect you in my office at 8 am tomorrow morning with your
plan of action."

(Supervisor)

Sam: "Come on
man, what’s up?"
Lola: "You know
I can’t have you out there all liquored up. Someone might report us, then
we’d lose this job." " I saw you" (The phone rings and she picks it up
says a few things them hangs up). "What was I saying, oh yeah, I saw you
drinking a beer and taken a toke over there by the café at lunch
time."
Sam: "So what!
Lunch time is my own time."
Lola: "Sammy
you might hurt somebody when you get back on that rig. So ease off the
booze and get back to work."
Presenter/Trainer
discuss each and every case with the group. In each case what was done
correctly and what areas can be improved upon. Remember to remind the supervisors
that they must document each and every meeting with the employee.
Have the group
break up into pairs and each take turns at being a supervisor and an employee.
Give them 10 to 15 minutes each. Then get back together as a group and
discuss the difficulties and the innovative techniques they came up with
for this role-playing.
