| Observing
& Documenting Role Playing
Presenter must
do 1st set of role-playing with some members of the audience – given scripts.
The audience is asked to observe and document the physical and behavioral
indicators within the skit. Please have your "Players" read the script
and ask any questions of you prior to the presentation to the rest of the
group.
Presenter is
the narrator.
Scene: Office
Working Environment
Players: Pedro
(the Enabler)
Frank (Other
Supervisor)
Maria (Supervisor
& Enabler)
Donna (Employee
with alcohol or other drug problem)
Props: A Tissue
A pad of Paper
and Pen
A cell phone
A desk or table
and chair
Narrator:
"It’s two minutes to eight am, the beginning of the Monday work day. Pedro
has just punched the time clock and is at his desk doing some paperwork.
The phone rings, it’s Donna calling from home."
Donna:
"Hi Pedro, I knew you would be there. I’m running a little late, can you
punch in for me?"
Pedro:
"Sure the boss isn’t here yet anyway."
Narrator:
"Donna arrives at work 20 minutes late."
Donna:
"Hi Pedro, thanks for taking care of everything, I owe you one."
Pedro:
"Are you sick? Your eyes are all red. Don’t give it to me whatever it is."
Donna:
"No you won’t get sick it’s only my allergies." (Have Donna start talking
on and on about nothing in particular)
(Frank and Maria
are walking in the area.)
Maria:
"Donna has always been a good worker but lately she seems to catch every
cold, flu, and whatever bug happens to be around. She’s making some mistakes.
I know her problem solving skills are better than that. Generally, her
work is starting to suffer a bit. I wish she would go see a doctor."
Frank:
"What are you going to do about it?"
Maria:
"I don’t know, maybe get her some vitamin C." (Maria walks towards Pedro
and Donna and Frank walks out of the scene.)
Pedro:
"Good morning Maria"
Donna:
(Wiping her nose with the tissue and coughing a little) "Hi Maria, any
good news from the meeting this morning?"
Maria:
"Just the same old thing. Oh, Donna I’ll need that report by the end of
the day. It needs to have the financial analysis, marketing profile, last
months numbers, any trends you might be forecasting, you know the usual
format."
(While Maria
is talking have Donna space out and look over at something else)
Donna:
"Ah, Sure, no problem." (Have Donna walk away and stumble)
Maria:
"Is she okay."
Pedro:
"Allergies."
Maria:
(Shakes her head and walks away.)
Donna:
(Comes back to Pedro’s desk) "Pedro, I only have part of that report done
can you help me with the financials?"
Pedro:
"Sure I’ve pretty much finished what I needed to get done today."
END

conclusions?
-
Did they identify
Pedro as the enabler?
-
What behaviors did
Pedro exhibit as the enabler?
-
Did they identify
Maria as an enabler?
-
What behaviors did
Maria exhibit as the enabler?
-
Did they pick up
on all the clues?
-
Excessive talking
-
Lack of focus and
concentration
-
Running nose
-
Red Eyes
-
Little cough
-
Being late
-
Being late on a
Monday morning
-
Lack of coordination
-
Inability to meet
deadlines
-
Errors in judgment
-
Making mistakes
-
Productivity
-
Excessive colds
and flu illnesses
-

for illnesses
-
Do they have reasonable
suspicion?
-
Should they have
a meeting with Donna to discuss the decline in job performance?
-
Discuss the pitfalls
of using subjective language and how things can be re-phrased within their
documentation.
After discussing
this, have the group divide up into an even number of groups
For example,
4 groups, then have each group create a role-playing skit. Have the other
groups observe and document. The group that comes up with the scenario
must also list each and every clue given in the skit. Have them discuss
it afterwards as you did with the large group.
